Christ-Roi Parish / Moncton
Established before 1930
First church and first pastor : 1950
After World War II, several hundreds of houses were built in this new neighbourhood of Moncton to accommodate soldiers returning from war, and the whole region greatly developed. Two vast buildings were bought from Camp 31 of Canadian Air Force. A first church was built and dedicated to Christ the King in 1947. This chapel was under the jurisdiction of the Cathedral.
The parish itself was erected in 1950. However in 1959, a fire completely destroyed Christ the King Church. The new church will be open to worship on July 29, 1962.
The construction of this church marks the arrival of a new modernism in ecclesiastical architecture. Its inclined roofs an its wide windows, the layout of the sanctuary and the nave all contributed to make of this building a point of reference in Moncton’s architectural diversity. This church also contains works of the great artist Jordi Bonet : the ceramics in the hall entrance as well as the Stations of the Cross are his creations.
